GAYATRI MANTRA

GAYATRI MANTRA காயத்திரி மந்திரம்

What is mantra?

Mantra is two sanskrit word; Man – to think & Tra – tool. So mantra is a tool to make our mind positive.

Mantra is actually an Exercise to tune our mind positve. 45 minutes of walking is good for our health and 20 minutes of Japa (Prayer) is good for our mind.

What is Gayatri Mantra?

Gayatri Mantra is very sacred which cleans our soul like water cleans our body. So, it is mandatory to chant Gayatri Mantra 108 times before chanting any other mantras.

During upanayanam, it is being ordered to chant the Gayathri Mantra atleast 108 times a day. (But 1008 times chanting of gayathri is the best)

Why Gayatri mantra is being called Mother of All Mantras?

All the mantras in the world are Prayoga Mantras, with which either you can get something or get rid of something. But Gayatri Mantra is the only mantra is being recited to clean our soul. That’s why it is being called mother of all mantras.

Gayatri Mantra is believed to be the oldest mantra. Gayatri Mantra was believed to be given by Sage Viswamitra (3.62.10 hymn from Rigveda). Gayatri mantra is also found in Sukla Yajur Veda and Krishna Yajur Veda

Meaning of Gayatri Mantra?

A simple meaning is “we meditate on the supremacy of Sun, who illuminate our mind and inspire our intelligence”.

As per Manu Smrithi, Chant Gayatri Mantra in the morning in Standing Posture facing East just before sunrise and in the evening in Sitting Posture facing east while the sun is being set.

Brahmins believe Chanting Gayatri mantra everyday is equal to chanting entire Vedas.

Whether female can recite Gayatri Mantra?

Now, there is a fallacy that female should not chant Gayatri Mantras. But, it is not correct.

Swami Chinmayananda, in his book called “Gayatri”, clearly states that if a male chant mantras, it is beneficial to him whereas chanting by a female is beneficial to the whole family. Also, Chinmayananda quotes Manusmrithi, in olden times, Upanayana was performed for girls too and they were taught Gayatri Mantras and Vedas and practised Yagnas. [Yajnopavitam is being called as Bratabandha, Janivaara, Jandhyam, Poita, Poonal, Janeu, Lagun, Yajnopavita, Yagyopavit, Yonya and Zunna in different languages]

Verse from Manu smriti proves this: “purA- kalpe NaariNaam (kumArINAm) maunji-bandhanam-Ihyate adhyApanam cha vEdAnAm sAvitri-vachanam thathA”. Maunji is Sacred thread. It says, in the olden days (purA- kalpe), Girls (kumArINAm) wore Sacred thread (Maunji), taught and chanted (adhyApanam) Veda ( vEdAnAm) and Gayatri ( sAvitri-vachanam). (But few orthodox brahmins mainly Vaishnavaites never trust this sentence as they claim it is a wrong notation muddled during the period when Hinduism was affected very badly esp. during the time when many kings adopted buddism and propagated it vigorously)

But I believe what is good for me is good for my wife too and it is good for you and all. So, I request all (both male and female) to chant Gayatri daily without fail to clean your soul.

“Practise before Preach”
As a Vaishnavaite Brahmin, before preaching others I should put it into practise. Yes, i did. This mantra is chanted by my wife. And you can expect many more Gayatris in the coming days.
